OnCourse Crashing

Hi team,

We've been using OnCourse for years now without a hitch. This year we've been using it successfully on a Windows 7 Professional machine.

However more recently it started to become quite slow and unusable, then would crash. Since the machine only had 2GB RAM we upgraded to 8GB. OnCourse has since become a bit more usable but is still crashing a lot. The Server window only ever reports usage of around 50 - 80MB of memory, and checking in Task Manager shows onCourse using around 200MB memory, no other programs are using a significant amount of system resources.

It's a fairly recent install of Windows 7, the user is savvy in regards to not installing dodgy stuff from the web etc.

Using Version 6.0.1.

Sample of Log files in C:\Program Files\onCourse\onCourseServer.log read as follows (truncated as it says too many characters for post). Let me know if I can provide any other info to assist in diagnosing the issue. Many thanks for your fantastic software.

Comments

  • Some things to look at:

    * is it the server or the client with the problem?
    * are you running the latest Java
    * when the problem happens, what does the memory usage look like?
    * are only some things slow, or everything
    * when the problem happens what does the CPU usage look like: which app is using the CPU?
    * does the problem still happen if you move it to another machine

Without more detailed analysis I can't say what is happening, but recent versions of onCourse have been getting more frugal with CPU and memory, not the other way. So you should see better performance through each upgrade. We do offer a managed hosted offering if your budget stretches to that.
